SHINE VILLAGE
UPDATES FROM SHINE COMMUNITY
INCOME GENERATING BUSINESSES
After a disastrous harvest season in 2023 following Cyclone Gabriel, 2024 has seen strong yields of fish from the re-contructed fish pond, maize and rice to supply the Shine Mill at Songani.
With the new hothouse underway, a great crop of tomatoes has been harvested.
WOOLLEN JUMPERS & POLAR FLEECES
Such excitement at the distribution of an amazing array of knitted jumpers from Elaine Lethbridge in Wellington and polar fleeces from Timaru Altrusa.
June and July are often quite cold in the south of Malawi and when it is cold the children huddle together around their little cooking stoves for warmth resulting in many severe burns.
The provision of warm clothing enables the young children to leave their homes and to regularly attend the Shine Early Years Programme.
HEALTH CLINIC
Mothers and Babies come to Shine once a month for a ‘weigh in’ and general health check. Due to funding from a NZ Shine Trustee, they are able to be transported to the Domasi Medical Clinic or Zomba Hospital for further treatment as required.
OUTREACH MINISTRY
Visits to the local villages are made regularly by the Ministry Team accompanied by the Shine House Girls.
People are ministered to and where there is a need given basic supplies of soap, sugar, salt, soy pieces and clothing items.
Those with medical issues are also taken to the Clinic or Hospital for treatment
MATERNITY WARD
Young mother's in the 'Kangaroo Ward' are regularly supplied with small jerseys and booties for their premature newborn babies.

The Power Of Books
“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” is a powerful film which follows the challenges of a young student William Kamkwamba in Malawi who dropped out of school after his parents were unable to pay his school fees. He continued to sneak into the schools tiny library and discovered a way to help save his village from starvation - through wind power! The film, which came out on Netflix in 2019, paints a shocking picture of Malawi and the challenges faced by most families in accessing education which we all may easily take for granted.
Shine Relief plans to open a school in the next 3-5 years for vulnerable children in the poorest region of Zomba District. Take a look at this new coverage on YouTube about this wonderful story of transformation against the odds.
